Become a Voice for Sexual Reason!

I am often amazed at the responses people in our culture have to anything to do with sex. We can be truly repressed, judgmental, and sanctimonious, which is why sexologists and sex therapists are so important in their roles as educators.

I’m thinking about some remarks made by a certain politician who equated homosexual behavior - specifically anal sex - with incest, polygamy, bigamy, bestiality, and pedophilia. That there is a whole segment of our society out there who heard this and nodded their heads in agreement, because they happen to believe that homosexuality and therefore homosexual behavior is wrong, defies logic.

There are many areas in the field of sexology in which people hold controversial views. Unfortunately, these views often manifest in ways that can hurt real people and lead to hatred, bigotry, and bullying. Those on the receiving end of these attitudes and behaviors frequently experience self- loathing, shame, inability to form intimate attachments, and for some, suicide.

As a sex therapist, I am seen as an authority regarding sexual issues and my voice is heard, if not always agreed with. I can at least help people to think – to consider a different point of view or re-examine their own beliefs. I have some power and with it, great responsibility to make sure that what I say is based on research, education, and experience and is not coming from a place of personal bias. At times, I may express my own opinions, but I am always sure to frame them as such and in so doing, I let others know that it’s ok to think differently about things, but always to do no harm.

The program at STTI will help you to become an authority in this field and be a voice of reason. The courses are all designed to not only give you the education you need to practice sex therapy, but will help you fully explore the issues regarding sexual beliefs and biases that not only impair healthy sexuality but also lead to the extremes that prevent all members of society from enjoying the freedom to express themselves joyfully.

Sign up now for the free class on Saturday, January 21st, when we will have Brian Brownstein from the U.S. Department of Probation and Parole discuss the very controversial topic of Risk Assessment of Sex Offenders.
