Developmental Sexuality

Objectives

This class is designed to teach students to:

  1. Differentiate between sex and gender development.

  2. Formulate methods to treat the various causes and symptoms of abnormal sexual development.

  3. Describe how biological, social, cultural, and psychological factors affect psychosexual development.

  4. Describe the specific process of sexual development in young children.

  5. Develop and implement strategies to help parents talk to their children about sex and sexuality.

  6. Develop and implement strategies to speak with children about sexuality.

  7. Recognize how the teenage brain differs from an adult brain in executive functioning.

  8. Describe how adolescents make decisions about sexuality.

  9. Assess and treat sexual problems in children and adolescents.

  10. Describe the physiological and psychological changes to sexual functioning that occur as men and women age.

  11. Educate and treat older adults in order to optimize their sexual lives.
