Course Description:

This course provides an in-depth exploration of students' biases, identities, boundaries, and limitations as aspiring sexologists working with the Kink/BDSM community. Participants will engage in reflective exercises to uncover their own biases and assumptions regarding BDSM practices and lifestyles. Additionally, participants will develop strategies for promoting inclusivity, cultural competency, and affirmative care practices within their chosen work. By fostering self-awareness and sensitivity, this course aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide competent and affirming care to individuals within the Kink/BDSM community.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Engage in reflective exercises to uncover personal biases and assumptions.
  • Develop strategies for promoting inclusivity and cultural competency.
  • Describe affirmative care practices for working with the Kink/BDSM community.
  • Utilize self-awareness and sensitivity in professional practice.
  • Implement skills to provide competent and affirming care to clients.

- Introduction to biases in sexology and the importance of self-reflection
- Definition and exploration of identities within the Kink/BDSM community

12:30 AM – 12:45 AM: Review of Pre-work

- Reflections, New Awarenesses, and Identified Biases (15 mins 2-3 shares)
- Small group discussions on common biases towards BDSM practices and lifestyles (45 mins)

- Presentation by a guest speaker from the Kink/BDSM community or a professional with expertise in affirmative care
- 15-minute Q&A session with the guest speaker

5:15 PM - 6:15 PM: Strategies for Inclusivity and Cultural Competency

- Techniques for promoting inclusivity and cultural competency in sexological practice
- Discussion on the intersectionality of identities within the Kink/BDSM community
- Discussion on the intersectionality of identities as practitioners and how that impacts our work

6:15 PM - 6:30 PM: Integrating Affirmative Care into Practice

- Summary of key takeaways and actionable steps
- Development of personal action plans for implementing affirmative care
