The Use of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy in the Assessment and Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction

The pelvic health physiotherapy class will give practitioners a wider understanding of the pelvis, specifically the pelvic floor and its role within sexual health and dysfunction. This includes a description of the impact that common pelvic floor dysfunctions have on sexual function. The hope is that by the end of the 5 hour class you will have an understanding of what a pelvic health physiotherapist does in practice and when to refer patients. The elective will emphasize the importance of working on a team in sexual health treatment to provide the best care for patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Able to list the layers of the pelvic floor muscles and their roles including sexual function.
  • Able to describe the effect of pelvic floor muscle exercises on female and male sexual function.
  • Able to identify when a referral to a pelvic health physical therapist is necessary.
  • Able to list common pelvic floor dysfunctions treated by pelvic health physical therapists and their effect on sexual function.
  • Able to describe current research recommendations for common sexual dysfunction diagnosis’.
  • Able to describe the benefits of a multidisciplinary team and multimodal treatment method in sexual dysfunction.
  • Able to list other potential benefits from pelvic health physical therapy.

Once you have registered for the workshop, you need to view the materials and resources made available for each workshop. Begin with the curriculum and then view the video beginning with the name "Home Study" followed by the name of the class. Other videos are available for you to view and will add to your knowledge. There are also resource documents with each workshop.

When you have completed viewing the videos and reviewing the resource documents, you may take the Assessment test for your workshop. Many workshops have two parts but may be taken individually for credit and are broken down for that purpose.

If you pass the assessment test, you may then request your certificate as the next step.

Calista Naismith

Pronouns: she/her

Calista is a full time pelvic floor physiotherapist with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy. While in physiotherapy school she obtained her Post-Graduate Certificate in Sexual Health and her Internal Pelvic Health Certification. Since graduating she has taken educational courses in sexual pain, pelvic health and pediatrics. She is acupuncture certified and has training in the practice of visceral manipulation.

Calista over the last year increased her education and knowledge base in the area of transgender health and how this relates to pelvic health and physiotherapy. Calista is passionate about pelvic health and sexual heath and educating others on the ways they intersect. She continues to pursue new educational opportunities and is currently pursuing her PhD in Clinical Sexology through the International Institute of Clinical Sexology.
