Students will examine ethical research challenges and will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative and qualitative methods, including correlation, survey, grounded theory, ethnographic, narrative and phenomenological. Students will learn research search strategies and will consider ways to incorporate reliable studies into their practices.


Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss significant historical examples of research ethic violations and their connection to aspects of oppression and marginalization (i.e. racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, & antisemitism).
  • Describe the role of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and its context as a mechanism for protecting the rights and welfare of research subjects.
  • Examine peer reviewed research articles relevant to the clinical sexology from a perspective of organization, readability, and clinical applicability.
  • Critique peer reviewed research as part of the process of developing a review of literature.
  • Demonstrate the ability to formulate a research question.
  • Describe specific characteristics of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research .
  • Discuss research articles and case study Compare and contrast the different interventions and support the best for the case.

Dr. Janis Roszler

Janis Roszler, PhD, is a licensed marriage and family therapist, sex therapist, registered dietitian, award-winning certified diabetes educator and award-winning medical media producer. She is the former host of the “Janis’ Jump Start to Good Health” and “dTalk” radio shows and has lectured in China, Israel and throughout the United States. Her books include Intimacy & Diabetes (ADA, 2020); Approaches to Behavior (ADA, 2014); Sex and Diabetes – For Him and For Her (ADA, 2007), which was nominated for the 2009 Consumer Book of the Year by the Society for Sex Therapy and Research; Diabetes on Your OWN Terms (Marlowe & Co, 2007) and The Secrets of Living and Loving with Diabetes (Surrey Books, 2004).
